60 Beans Coffee
why it’s 60 beans coffee
No one was more serious about how he took his morning coffee than the classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven. He would count out 60 coffee beans every morning. It was this number, he believed, that would make a perfect cup of coffee. Sixty ground beans is roughly equivalent to 8 grams (enough for a decent espresso), though this wasn’t invented until 1884, according to Open Culture. Beethoven used a glass, balloon-style coffee maker of his own invention, which probably looked similar to a modern siphon brewer. But it must have pulled a great cup of coffee because this ritual remained unchanged for the remainder of Beethoven’s short life.
Why the name "60 Beans"?
Our name comes from the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, who began every morning by counting out exactly sixty coffee beans for his cup — never fifty-nine, never sixty-one — and grinding them himself. We named our coffee for his ritual, and we hold every blend we select to that same standard.

Can I buy your coffee online?
Yes. Our House Blend and Thunderhead Espresso are available in 8 oz and 12 oz bags in our online store — just tap “Shop” in the menu — and we ship anywhere in the United States. You can also pick up a bag at any of our shops.
Do you roast your own coffee?
We hand-select our coffees from the world’s finest roasters and pack them fresh under our own label, so every bag meets the 60 Beans standard — the same care Beethoven took in choosing exactly the right beans for a perfect cup.
What blends do you offer?
House Blend — creamy, with notes of chocolate and hazelnut; a smooth medium roast. Thunderhead Espresso — toasted marshmallow, chocolate and almond; a medium-dark roast. Both are 100% Arabica, in 8 oz and 12 oz bags.
